Several years ago, after the Firefly series was cancelled, I received the complete Firefly series as a Christmas gift (along with the sequel movie Serenity). I started watching the episodes in their original order with the Not My Fault daughter, back to back to back. And when we got the the last one we just went back to the beginning and started again...

What would explain the ability of a low-budget sci-fi show to not only reach across generations, but leave young and old equally transfixed? I'm convinced my daughter learned more about liberty and loyalty, commitment and fairness, from those 14 episodes than she did in 12 years of public schooling.

Anyway, when I saw this article about watching Firefly with your kid, well it struck a chord with me. So we watched a few episodes last night, just for old times sake...

Got to see the Cure quite unexpectedly and spontaneously Sunday night in NYC. A stunning and breathtaking show…

I received an urgent text from friend Guach on Thanksgiving Day: “The Cure @ Beacon Theater. They are playing first 3 albums in entirety with original lineups!!!” Dan & I are original Cure fanboys, so I frankly thought his text deserved a few more exclamation points…

Recently nominated for 2012 induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the band looked and sounded great, and it was a genuine treat to be able to hear all the original Cure songs as they were initially produced.

Robert Smith was always the smiley face of the Goth rock scene…for as dark as some of the music sometimes seems, you always get the sense that’s he’s winking and smiling through it all.

Opening song: 10:15 Saturday Night. A gem.

Closing song? How about this: Boys Don’t Cry, my favorite Cure song ever.

In between? The entirety of Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, and Faith, followed by a full hour of encores (which included all the songs from Japanese Whispers B sides collection)… maybe 45-50 songs total.

An amazing experience all around...

So I just returned from some business travel, which meant I had the displeasure of spending a fair number of hours in airports dealing with connections, security, and immigration. I happened to be in a sort of food court area waiting for a connecting flight, and there was music playing loud enough so you could actually hear and understand it. Well, a Clash song comes on, Police and Thieves, and there's a recurring line in the song "...guns and ammunition." And it occurred to me that you could never utter the phrase "guns and ammunition" at an airport, as you'd have some serious splainin to do if anybody in an official capacity overheard you. But what if you're just humming and mumbling along absentmindedly to a song?

And by the way, really? They're playing Clash songs at airports now? And not the later more pop friendly Clash, but the original angry punk Clash. I guess it shows the mainstreaming over time of all pop culture elements, no matter how seemingly extreme they are in their moment. I fully expect to hear unfiltered gangsta rap at airports and dentist offices in 20 years time...

Incidentally, a Bob Marley song came on after The Clash: "Get Up Stand Up". You know the song: "...stand up for your rights, don't give up the fight." If anyone around me was aware of the irony of being in a place where you have virtually no civil rights while a song about rights is playing, they kept it well hidden...

It's not going to go bad and ammo and canned beans will see you through all manner of dark days, including the zombie apocalypse...I think you need to get clarification on the caliber firearm he's using the ammo for so you can be sure to get the right brand. He also needs a pair of business casual khaki slacks, 36 x 36, because you want to look sharp when you're dealing with the zombies...he'd also be fine with a Cabela's gift card, or a Dick's gift card...

Let's start with Ellen, who during Holland's World Cup run realized she had a dearth of Oranje gear. It's hard to find orange Holland clothing on short notice between major international competitions, but go here for some ideas - scroll through and perhaps you'll find something appropriately orangey. You could also contact these guys and ask what they might have. Ladies size medium will do the trick.

Alternatively, she has a need for a new Huskies sweatshirt...this one, in fact. Again, ladies size medium...

Next up Tom...who again goes with the tried and true red wine...6 or so bottles, decent quality, and he'sd like it noted that he was the original progenitor of the idea of finding wine under the tree. Some suggestions here...

Next in, Eric...who has a need for a ski boot bag...word is New England Ski has them on sale...

Ashley is up next, and she would love a Calphalon stainless pan. She already has a pretty complete set of nonstick, but she needs a good pan for searing and saute-ing...10- or 12-inch, either saute pan (flat bottom, straight sides) or a frying pan (note that Calphalon sometimes calls them "omelette pans"). And if it happens to come with a smaller bonus pan, well I'm sure she can live with that!
These pans can be found at TJ Maxx and Marshall's at big discounts. (Which is how she managed to accrue a full set of nonstick!) If not there, Le Gourmet Chef also carries them...however, I'd start here and see what you can find...
