I watched the last few stages of the Tour de France, just to see if the American Floyd Landis could actually come back from a large deficit after the mountain stages. Well he did, in the final grueling time-trial. The story seemed too good to be true -- Lance Armstrong retires so another American rides to the front -- and so of course it was too good to be true...

I picked a fine time to take a break from blogging -- the World Cup turned into a flop-fest before the greatest player of his generation commits the most appalling on-field act in a generation, the Loon of the North attempts to sling a missile across Japan, the Middle East simmers on the verge of full melt-down...
